Dyslexia Story Award
Earlier last year, our fourth grade teacher, Nicole Miller, along with her daughter, Everlee, were featured in a story on our local news that recently won First Place in its division! You can read more about Nicole and Everlee's story on their blog, Dyslexia Life.

Ian Itzkowitz Sailing
Ian Itzkowitz was recently selected as a new member of the Carolina Yacht Club Race Team. He participated in his first regatta, the 2017 US Opti Sailing Atlantic Coast Championship at Camp Sea Gull the weekend of September 23. Check out a video here.
Chase Carraway Summer Sailing
CFA Senior Chase Carraway competed in the SAISA Cressy Singlehanded High School Qualifier at Saint Petersburg Yacht Club in Florida on October 14-15. A steady East North East wind kicked in on Saturday ranging from 18-22 knots and Sunday produced 8-10 knots. Chase competed in the Radial fleet that was comprised of 39 sailors in the SAISA District with sailors from NC, SC, GA, FL & USVI. There were 10 races sailed on Saturday and 4 on Sunday; Chase sailed a consistent regatta and had 10 bullets (1st place finishes) to win decisively by 22 points! Chase now will represent Cape Fear Academy for the second concessive year at National Cressy Cup which will also be held at St Petersburg Yacht Club on October 27-29, 2017.

CFA Student Among "15 Under 15" Honorees
Again this year, a CFA student has been selected among thousands of local students for inclusion in the Star-News profiles of area youth who are notable among their peers for their academic, athletic, artistic, service, or leadership abilities. CFA congratulates Quaid Sutherland, grade 9, for his selection. The "15 Under 15" article highlights his study of, and work with, carnivorous plants and birds of prey, as well as his volunteer service to the Cape Fear Raptor Center. Quaid, the son of Mark and Laura Sutherland, also has passion and skill for tennis and is a member of CFA's varsity tennis team. Read more about this story here.

Amir Shaheen's Eagle Scout Project
Amir refurbished existing garden beds and built two raised vegetable beds and a shed to be used by residents of Glover Plaza for his Eagle Scout project. Read more about his service project here.

Libby Moore commits to UNC
Libby has verbally committed to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the Official Women's DI Soccer team. She told CFA, “My coaches at CFA (Meade McFarlane and Chris Meehl) have been very supportive of me throughout the past few years as I went through the recruiting process. McFarlane helped me improve my technical ability as well as gain confidence in myself that I lacked. McFarlane's positivity and belief in me has inspired me to be a better person with everything that I do, in soccer and in life. I chose to commit to UNC because my dad was a tar heel and it has always been my dream to play for UNC!”

Adrian Jones Wins Dance Competition
On July 12, 2017, Adrian won the title of Teen Mr. Dance of America 2018 in New Orleans, LA. He has been dancing at South East Dance Academy here in Wilmington since he was 18 months old, and has been on the competitive dance team since the age of six. Adrian's favorite styles of dance are tap and hip hop. Adrian stated, "I encourage everyone that no matter what, never be afraid to bust a move!"

Mary Bellamy Koonce Qualifies for Horse Show
Bellamy qualified for the World’s Championship Horse Show in Louisville, Kentucky. Bellamy competes year round in Saddle Seat Horse Back Riding Competition. Her horse is boarded and trained in Concord, North Carolina and Bellamy also trains in Raeford, North Carolina. Her family has traveled for four years with Bellamy competing in NC, SC, VA, and GA. As of June 2017, Bellamy was #1 in the United States in her division – 13 & Under Show Pleasures.
Chase Carraway Summer Sailing
https://sites.google.com/a/capefearacademy.org/www/home/unnamed-2.jpg Senior Chase Carraway participated in four major regattas over the summer. He competed in the 2017 US Sailing Youth Championship in Corpus Christi, Texas in the Laser Radial Fleet and was 5th overall in the 45th boat fleet.
In the 2017 Laser National regatta, Chase was 1st overall in the 55 boat fleet, and was named the U.S. Radial National Champion! The U.S. National Championship was hosted by Tahoe Yacht Club on beautiful Lake Tahoe in California July 19-23.
He also competed in the District 12 Grand Prix Championship at Wrightsville Beach the first weekend of August and was 1st overall in the 14 boat laser radial fleet.
In addition, Chase was selected to the U.S. Sailing ODP (Olympic Development Program) summer Youth Laser Radial Worlds Travel Team. Three male radial sailors and three female radial sailors comprise the team. These six radial laser sailors were coached by the ODP coaches at the Radial Youth Worlds Championship in Medemblik, Netherlands August 9-18 (practice days & racing). Chase was 27th out of 280 at this regatta where 46 countries were represented.
